Why Do We Reach?

This was an experiment for me in poetry writing, where the physical layout is as much a part of the poem as the words themselves.  Though it's from my senior year of high school, it's still one of my favorites.

        Why
    do we reach
         for things that seem
     forever                       out of reach?

Why do we try
      to attain them
  when it seems
       we can only
                   fail?

              Why,
when we grasp what we're reaching for
        and find something
        ToTaLLy DiFfeReNt,
     do we continue reaching?

  Why do we search
       for                        answers
         that may not
               exist?

                                  Why
                        do we follow our hearts
   when our reasoning
     tells us to
   "Forget it"?

                     Why
               do we try to
                     get somewhere
       when we don't know
                where
                      we're
                  going?

        Why
  do we keep reaching
for things  that   move    farther     away
         as        we    get  closer?

                       Maybe
                    it's because
                                     dreams
                                 are
                             all
                          we
                    have.
